Benjamin Banneker Elementary School
421 Burdette St.
New Orleans, LA 70118
Benjamin Banneker born in 1731 was an African American mathematician, astronomer, farmer and almanac author. He was also someone who stood strong in his beliefs of equality and the abolition of slavery. Banneker was able to utilize the almanac to peacefully address the inequalities of slavery by including African American poets, anti-slavery speeches, etc. His ability to express his values and fight for equality through words and educating the public is a means that has been used by many great leaders from Gandhi to Martin Luther King and should also be carried into our schools. Benjamin Banneker K-8 Elementary works towards educating the youth of New Orleans and teaching students how use education and knowledge to express themselves and stand up for what they believe in just like Benjamin Banneker had. It also has an extensive special needs program working to include all children in the learning process.
Mission- It is the mission of the Benjamin Banneker School leadership, faculty, and staff to prepare all students entrusted to our learning community with the skills necessary to become lifelong learners, critical thinkers, effective communicators, problem solvers and contributors to their communities.
